The work-based skills requirement applied to all students who joined after 30 June 2004. What are work-based skills? The aim of the work-based skills (WBS) requirement is to help you to demonstrate that you have put into practice the actuarial theory you gain through taking the exams.
However your final supervisor, who will sign off your final work-based skills documents for qualification, must be a Fellow of the IFoA, or of an International Actuarial Association (IAA) recognised actuarial association, such as the Society of Actuaries. They will need to be familiar with your work and progress.
If the student wishes to apply for the Associateship qualification (on completion of the relevant examinations, the Professional Skills Course and normally work-based skills over twelve months) the final signature should be given and the learning log sent to the Education Services Team.
Work-based learning (“WBL”) is the basis of the Normative Skills programme where skills students are exposed to in the Normative Skills workshop and modules can be put in practice and developed in the workplace. WBL aims to close the Gap between theory and practice when it comes to Normative Skills to form a well-rounded Actuarial Professional.
